Between the East and the West, from the Caspian Sea to the Black Sea, stretches a mountainous chain of more than one thousand two hundred kilometers. Such is the Caucasus, to which are attached many legends and myths like that of Prometheus, thief of the fire punished by Zeus. Peaks, deep valleys, forests, desert lands ... life is rough and its population is one of the most diverse in the world. To the north, where the highest point of this chain, highest in Russia and the highest in Europe, climbs to 5,642 m, the Elbruz mountain, the Kabardino-Balkaria state. Renowned for their beauty, their pride and their courage, the Cherkesses - a matriarchal society at the origin - give a privileged place to the female. Men and women came together, in rich attires exalting their presence, their Kabardin horses, vigorous, agile and enduring. Long tunics for men, dresses open on shirts richly embroidered for women; silver cartridges for men, finely chiselled daggers for women ... As a tribute to this culture, this square is embellished with embroidered fabrics, objects and jewels.
