During his reign, Napoleon will have hunted more than three hundred and fifty times, according to different sources. This activity will have thus marked his daily life and had an important influence on the curial life and the politics of his time.. The hunting administration founded in 1804 and inspired by the old monarchy fulfills its role of representation so well by conforming to the customs, that the restored monarchy made only minimal adjustments, while restricting its use to the recreation of the royal family. Under the Second Empire, the imperial veneration was again recreated on the same model and perceived as one of the elements of the Napoleonic heritage. Finally, the legacy, but also the image of the imperial hunts will have been present throughout the nineteenth century in the uses of different dynasties.
As illustrated on our scarf, Napoleon had had roads and recreational areas set up near the forests so that the ladies could go for a horse-drawn carriage ride and have fun too. (see photos), while the horn ringer, dressed in the imperial livery of the Grande Armée, wearing a bicorne communicate with the dogs using their instrument.
I display (Photo ) a sculpture bought by Napoleon III at the Salon de 1869. The artist subtly makes the tension between the dogs pulling on their loins and the stingy slightly tilted backwards. Sign of the times, the valet wears a Louis XV costume: French dress, bicorne and cauldron boots. The nineteenth century maintains the nostalgia of the veneration of the Ancien Régime. Napoleon III will prevail for the imperial pack.
It is by a cartoon that Philippe Ledoux illustrates this part of hunting in imperial livery. He does not forget the eagles at the bottom corners. The colors are delicious (Yellow, Or, brown, Grey) on an ivory background surrounded by a delicate gray-green margin. A marvel of delicacy !!!
