Serge Diaghilev is the true founder of the company of the Ballets Russes for which he organizes every year tours in Europe, 's 1909 when he died, In 1929. He chooses carefully the musical works that he wants to show to the Western public: he knows the need of exoticism of this one and wants to guarantee the commercial success of his company. It begins with a retrospective exhibition of Russian art, at the Grand Palais in 1906, then continues 1907 at the Palais Garnier by five major Russian historical concerts. In 1908, he presents Mussorgsky's opera Boris Godunov, before turning, the next year, to the representation of ballets on Russian music.
It's in 1909 at the Théâtre du Châtelet, that the troupe of artists that he formed under the name of Ballets Russes occurs for the first time, with immense success, before traveling across Europe or the American continent, each year until 1929.
Diaghilev unites with flair for his ballets a team of talented Russian artists, both for the choreography, sets and costumes, with artists as famous as Mikhail Fokine , Vaclav Nijinski , Alexandre Benois ... The team of the Ballets Russes thus creates for each performance a true masterpiece of total art, merging the dance, the music, the scenery: "When I produce a ballet, I do not lose sight of any of these three factors for a single moment, "said Diaghilev.
