Hermès: superb silk square titled "Pavois"
Created by Philippe Ledoux en 1964. Will be reissued in 1983, 1986, 1990, 1998 and in 2012.
Peace on the seas. A same breeze animates these 18th century bulwark. Difficult situation, merchant ship, flagship… Gathered together without connonade or collision.
Amazing square! Originally, the "Pavois" are large shields decorated with coats of arms or other representations, oval or quadrangular, worn by infantrymen and more particularly crossbowmen, in the middle Ages. The use is mainly attested among the Franks from the 5th century: it is used by Clovis in 482 and in 508. We see the development of this defensive weapon in the 13th century. A large bulwark that could cover the entire body and therefore proved necessary.
Later, the term was used in terms of navy and the origin of the word bulwark (or pavilion) is the outside cover of the battleships of warships. They were originally covered with strips of colored fabric on solemn days. We were talking about flags.
With the adoption of alphabetical code flags, these were adopted for this ornamentation. By extension, nowadays and for the holidays, we hoist all the flags available in the mast, attached to each other: this is what we call "the great bulwark".
On a navy blue background, these breathtaking bulwarks seem to flap in the wind. Even their shadows are moving.
I would like to point out that the colors of the photos are true to reality and that any possible variation is due to the difference in light..
Copyright is not clearly seen, because it is black on a navy background. You can hardly guess it in the photo.
A wonder !!! It can be the subject of a superb gift !!! Composition label has been removed
