Made for the five hundredth anniversary of the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus, this square sees the Santa Maria caravel sailing, on board which the navigator discovered the island of Guanahani (San Salvador) the 12 October 1492 when he thought to land in India. On the right and on the left the hemispheres of the globe of Behaim illustrate the knowledge of the cartographers of the time, whose imprecisions led Columbus to believe that the Indies were closer than they were. At the top is represented the frontispiece of the book Les Voyages de Théodore de Bry (1528-1598) famous for his pictorial descriptions of early European expeditions to the Americas.
