In France, at the end of the 18th century, two architecture students become friends. One is Charles Percier, the other is Pierre François Fontaine. Wonderful cartoonists, highly appreciated by the Bonapartes, they will make a brilliant official career and will generally be regarded as the representatives par excellence of the Empire style. The day of his coronation, in 1804, Napoleon I, future emperor, will arrive in a carriage that Fontaine and Percier are in charge of drawing. They conceive thus a sumptuous team of eight horses, but this one is refused. The French Revolution was only fifteen years old, all the luxurious crews had been destroyed, and Napoleon feared that the splendor of it would revive the anger of the people. The original drawing belongs to the Hermès collection and served as a model for the draftsman who kept only the horses. No composition tag
