The secrets of an object
To imagine this square, Te Rangitu Netana, Maori tattoo artist, was inspired by the life of his grandfather and the Maori culture. An owl, messenger sailing from the material world to the spiritual world, rises above four walls that draw a house, meeting place of the tribe. North are symbolized knowledge and connection to heaven, south creation and water, to the east the light and the giant eagle on which the Maori traveled. West, the tears of the albatross represent the sufferings of this people. The central circle represents a giant octopus, navigation symbol, and its tentacles, the eight directions of the Maori compass, in a living crossing of cultures.
