The Marwari is the horse of the Rajputs, the first Indo-Aryans. Not only does this caste have historical origins, but it also has a mythical genealogy according to which the Rajput kings were born from the sun whose rays were made by their horses.
Another legend tells that a black Arab thoroughbred stallion roamed the desert when he fell in love with a blond-haired mare. On a night when the moon formed a crescent, he united with her. Their foals were all born with crescent-shaped (or lyre) ears, hence the Marwari race.
Prince Siddharta, the future Buddha, left his palace on a shimmering white horse. All this symbolism has made Rajput runners and their Marwari, famous all over the world.
In the center of the shawl stands an elegant and graceful frame. The other horses look at her, waiting for their turn to run a parade. They are all sumptuously decorated with jewels and brocades, as precious as those of their runners. This parity signifies the intense relationship established between the master and the animal. If it has been used in history as a cavalry horse by the inhabitants of the region of Marvar, the Marwari has been noted for its fidelity and bravery in combat. But in the Marwari race is a strain of ancestors known as Natchni, considered by local people as being "born to dance". Decorated with silver, jewelery and bells, headdresses and cuirasses adorned with gold necklaces and precious stones, these horses are trained to perform complex movements, prancing and jumping during many ceremonies, including weddings. Although the Natchni strain is now extinct, horses suitable for this type of performance are still in demand in rural India. Marwari horses still have an important place in the parades.
