Loewe, 1846 Madrid: from saddlery to shoemaking

Founded in 1846 in Madrid by German leatherworker Enrique Loewe Roessberg, the house remains the global benchmark for Spanish nappa — a full-grain calfskin whose hand carries across into pump uppers just as it does across handbags. Under Jonathan Anderson (2013-2023), footwear became a laboratory: sculptural heels, petal-rounded toes, rubber soles owned openly. David Herrero has continued that line since 2024, with Proenza Schouler's Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez now at creative direction.

Key models

The Squeeze slingback — bobbin heel, twisted ribbons, back strap — is the standout post-Anderson hit. Toy heels, with rubber soles and block heels, ported sneaker comfort into the pump. The Petal pump rounds the toe into a corolla and plays restraint. The line also includes the metal-bar pumps and the Campo espadrilles with a heel for summer. Materials and authentication

Uppers are mostly smooth or patent nappa, with occasional suede, goat or raffia. Before listing, we check: the LOEWE Made in Spain marking (primary) or Made in Italy inside the upper, the Anagram logo embossed on the insole, the size stamping, stitch regularity, sole wear and heel-tip condition. Our listings document the Toy rubber sole specifically, any wear marks and whether the original box is included.
