The story behind the composition of the square:
The mountain zebra of the Cape is a rare and protected species found in the provinces of southeastern South Africa. The pattern by Alice Shirley is inspired by a foal that went to explore the fynbos, this unique vegetation of the southernmost region of the country. It grows on poor soils and regenerates thanks to bushfires ignited by lightning during the dry season. In spring, the Fynbos transforms into a carpet of fragrant and multicolored flowers, a dreamlike landscape. The artist reproduced nearly forty different plants to create a sumptuous setting for the little zebra.
