Founded in Munich in 1976 by Michael Cromer, MCM — Modern Creation München — built its universe around the Visetos coated canvas, a monogram of interlocking MC logos under a laurel wreath, and a signature cognac colorway. Acquired in 2005 by Korea's Sungjoo Group, the house pivoted toward streetwear and K-pop relevance, driving a secondary-market revival that accelerated with the Stark backpack in the 2010s.

Authenticating an MCM bag: Made in Korea vs Made in Germany

Since the 2005 Korean acquisition, modern production is stamped Made in Korea, while vintage pre-2005 pieces carry a Made in Germany mark (occasionally Made in Italy). Both are authentic. Check points: the rectangular interior hardware plate with the MCM logo and a 6-8 digit serial, the interior "MCM München" leather tag, consistent Visetos pattern alignment without mid-letter cuts at seams, and YKK or Lampo zippers depending on era. Stark studs must be riveted, never glued.
