Pre-owned Loewe Amazona Bag, Authenticated | JoliCloset

The Loewe Amazona is, properly speaking, the bag that put the Spanish house on the international map. Drawn up in 1975 by Dario Rossi as a boston bag with longitudinal zip, twin leather handles and a rectangular base, it became within a decade an attribute of the European jet-set — carried by Queen Sofia of Spain, Isabelle Adjani and Jacqueline de Ribes. Fifty years on, as Loewe (founded in Madrid in 1846) opens a new chapter under Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez, the Amazona remains, alongside the Puzzle and the Flamenco, one of three catalogue pillars. JoliCloset currently lists 215 pre-owned Amazona bags.

Sizes and variants

The Amazona is built today in four main formats: Amazona 23 (the most compact, handheld), Amazona 28 (the city size), Amazona 36 (the most common weekend format) and Amazona 44 — the travel version that gave the line its name. The house completed the grid in 2020 with the Amazona 75, a tribute to the original drawing. On the platform: 208 Amazona handbags, 3 totes and 2 travel bags.

Leathers and colours

The Amazona's signature is its Napa Aire leather: an extra-supple, ventilated lambskin patented by Loewe whose drape is instantly recognisable and which slumps slightly with wear — an effect collectors look for. Alongside, you'll find versions in firmer palmellato calf, suede, croc-embossed leather, plus the coated Anagram monogram canvas that defines the 1990s Amazonas and remains heavily collected. Cult shades — cognac, black, camel, chocolate — concentrate most of the pre-owned offer.

Vintage vs. reissue: pricing

The Amazona market is dual. Recent Napa Aire models retail new between €1,800 for a 23 and over €2,600 for a 36. On JoliCloset, the range runs from around €250 for a 1990s vintage Amazona 23 (Anagram canvas, well-worn leather) to over €1,200 for a recent Napa Aire model in excellent condition — a 35 to 55 % discount versus boutique retail. The "vintage in good overall condition" bracket currently offers the best ratio of heritage to price.

Authentication

Every Amazona listed is reviewed by our workshop before publication: embossed Loewe anagram on the front, hot-stamped "Made in Spain" on the inner tab, serial number inside, characteristic suppleness of the Napa Aire, regularity of the saddle-stitched edges and tension of the longitudinal zip. For other icons of the Madrid house, browse the Puzzle, the Flamenco or the Hammock.
