Lady Dior Bag, authenticated — Mini, Medium | JoliCloset

Created in 1994 under the working name Chouchou, the bag was rechristened Lady Dior in 1995 after Bernadette Chirac gifted one to Diana, Princess of Wales, during an official visit to Paris — the photograph of Lady Di carrying the navy version travelled the world. Three decades on, the cannage quilting and the four metal D-I-O-R charms remain the most recognisable signature in Dior leather goods. JoliCloset lists 202 pre-owned Lady Dior bags, from Nano (12 cm) to Large (32 cm), in lambskin, calfskin or limited Toile de Jouy editions.

Sizes: from Nano to Large

Five formats structure the model. The Nano (12 × 10 × 5 cm) functions as a chain pochette. The Mini (17 × 15 × 7 cm) is the most-requested version — top handle or shoulder. The Small (20 × 17 × 8 cm) and Medium (24 × 20 × 11 cm) are the everyday classics. The Large (32 × 25 × 11 cm) takes A4. On our catalogue, Mini and Medium together account for close to 70% of stock — the Lady Dior handbag covers 176 listings, complemented by 7 small leather goods and a handful of cannage wallets.

Leather, cannage and finishes

Cannage lambskin — the diamond quilting borrowed from Napoleon-III fauteuils — is the historical finish of the model: supple, luminous, but sensitive to scuffing. Cannage calfskin, more structured, holds the rectangular shape better and ages well day-to-day. Embroidered editions (pearls, gold thread, micro-cannage), Toile de Jouy, patent leather and exotics (python, lizard, crocodile) are collector territory. Colour-wise, black remains the most-searched finish — Ultra Matte black, classic lambskin black — ahead of the signature red and powder pink. Hardware comes in yellow gold, rose gold, palladium and the matte-black Ultra Matte edition.

Retail price, value and secondary market

At the boutique, the Lady Dior Medium has climbed from roughly $4,200 in 2018 to over $6,300 today; the Mini starts near $4,800, the Large above $7,000. On JoliCloset, our pre-owned Lady Dior bags start at €800 for a well-kept vintage and reach €18,000 for exotic-skin editions. A Mini in black lambskin in good condition typically sits around €2,200-€2,800 — close to 50% savings versus retail. With one of the highest value-retention rates in luxury resale, the Lady Dior is among the most liquid Dior models on the secondary market.

Authentication: the details that matter

Our team checks a Lady-Dior-specific set of markers: weight and engraving depth of the hand-riveted D-I-O-R charms, closed jump rings, stitch alignment on every cannage square, "CHRISTIAN DIOR PARIS / Made in Italy" engraving on the reverse of the closure bar, date code in YY-MM-XX format (or microchip on post-2021 production), authenticity card in RI/MA + digits + letters format, satin lining with diagonal CD print. Charm engraving must be sharp, never blurred; rivets must not move. To sell your Lady Dior, our Dior consignment service covers free appraisal and a six-language listing.
