Vintage Dior Saddle Bag, authenticated | JoliCloset

John Galliano introduced the Saddle at the Dior spring 2000 show — a horseshoe-shaped silhouette borrowed from equestrian saddles, anchored by a gold CD clasp and a sculpted metal stirrup. Discontinued in the early 2010s, it became one of the most-hunted vintage Dior bags before Maria Grazia Chiuri reissued it in 2018 in blue and grey Oblique canvas. On JoliCloset, 290 pre-owned Dior Saddle bags are listed today — Mini, Medium, Oblique jacquard, plain calf, even rare Galliano-era embroidered editions.

Sizes and variations

The Saddle Medium (25 × 20 × 7 cm) is the original Galliano silhouette, fixed shoulder strap and CD-stamped stirrup. The Mini Saddle (19.5 × 16 × 6.5 cm), reintroduced in 2018, comes with a detachable Oblique strap and a chain — the version most commonly searched as a vintage Dior saddle bag today. The Saddle pouch (10 listings) and the Saddle wallet on chain (19 pieces) carry the same horseshoe shape in pochette format. Kim Jones revived the men's line in 2019 with a black grained-calf Saddle Bag.

Canvases and leathers

Three material families define the catalogue. Oblique canvas — the diagonal CD jacquard, in blue, grey or khaki — is the icon Chiuri brought back. Smooth calfskin in black, powder beige, white or red dresses the cleaner, year-round versions. Seasonal editions in Toile de Jouy, Diorissimo or beaded embroidery (Galliano 2000-2003) have crossed into collector territory. Black remains the most-searched finish, ahead of blue Oblique.

Pre-owned price and value

Retail today: a Saddle Medium starts near $3,800, the Mini around $2,800. On the secondary market, our vintage Dior Saddle bags start around €600 for an Oblique pouch and climb past €4,500 for a rare Galliano-era patent or exotic. Original 1999-2003 pieces — particularly embroidered or python — are the most coveted by collectors, and their value keeps rising. A 2018 Mini Oblique typically resells in the €1,800-€2,200 range depending on condition.
