Hermès: superb silk square titled “Torana”
Signed A. Faivre in 1987. Reissued in 2000.
The Sanskrit term "Toraṇa", means, in Indian architectural treatises, whatever their religious obedience, an arch or portico, opening the enclosure of a sacred place or a city. Initially the term designates a simple pillar arch, very light in appearance, which gives access to a religious building, opposite the entrance to the monument or the four east.
But in South India, from medieval times, we designate under the name of toraṇa, the monumental doors opening the enclosure of the temples or the cities, or gopura. Unlike the previous examples, these "doors", which are real pavilions, are in most cases higher than the temple itself. They were indeed intended to be seen from afar to signal the power of the city or the temple. We can cite, among the most monumental, Madurai gopuras in Tamil Nadu, or those of Hampi-Vijayanagar in Karnataka.
At the bottom of this square, the famous sculpture chosen in 1947 as a symbol of the Indian Republic: the tent of Ashoka with 4 back lions (3th century BC. JC).
The colors are fabulous. A wonder !!! .
It can be the subject of a superb gift!
