Chloé Paddington Bag — Padlock, Grained Leather, Vintage | JoliCloset

The Paddington isn't just another Chloé bag: it's one of the original 2000s It-bags. Designed by Phoebe Philo and launched in 2005, it sold out on pre-order before reaching stores — unprecedented for a $1,500 bag at the time. Twenty years on, its brass padlock and key make it a true collector's piece, and it's one of the most-represented Chloé models on the resale market: over 70 authenticated examples are currently listed on JoliCloset, from $410.

History and Design

Released for the Fall-Winter 2005 collection, the Paddington is defined by its solid-metal padlock (typically brass with an aged-gold finish) and the matching key tied to the bag. The padlock is genuinely heavy — around 200 g — and was central to the bag's identity. The silhouette is intentionally slouchy: thick grained leather with visible saddle stitching, two short rolled handles, and a removable shoulder strap on most versions.

Sizes and Variants

The Paddington exists mainly in Medium (~38×27 cm), the original size, and Mini crossbody (~24 cm). Rarer Capsule versions (backpack, weekender) appear occasionally on resale, as do evening satin, patent, metallic and python seasonal editions — especially sought-after by collectors.

The Paddington on the Pre-Owned Market

The Paddington was quietly phased out of Chloé's catalog after 2010 and is no longer produced — making it a genuine vintage piece rather than a current classic. That scarcity supports prices on clean examples. Pre-owned, expect $410-$750 for Medium pieces in fair-to-good condition, $750-$1,300 for very good condition, and higher for limited editions (python, metallic, bicolor leathers). Authenticating the Paddington

On each Paddington we check: padlock weight and finish (a real Paddington has a heavy, working padlock engraved "Chloé"), grained-leather quality (thick, matte, age-appropriate patina), saddle-stitch regularity, the interior "Chloé Made in Italy" stamp and serial number, and the original key on its leather thong. Early-2000s counterfeit Paddingtons are common — which is why systematic expertise matters before any listing goes live.
