Hermès Kelly Bag Pre-Owned | JoliCloset

The Kelly traces back to the 1852 Haut à Courroies, an oversized equestrian bag. Robert Dumas reworked it in 1935 into the smaller Sac à Dépêches, and it was renamed Kelly in the late 1950s after Grace Kelly was photographed on the cover of Life using the bag to shield her pregnancy from photographers. Each one is still made by a single artisan over 18 to 24 hours, with 36 pieces of leather and roughly 680 hand stitches. JoliCloset lists 551 pre-owned Hermès Kelly bags within the handbags sub-category — the largest authenticated Kelly selection in Europe.

Sizes and silhouettes

Seven sizes coexist: Mini Kelly 20, Kelly 25, 28, 32 (limited), 35, 40 and 50 (a Haut à Courroies carryover). The 25 and 28 take most of the demand on the secondary market. Two silhouettes: the Sellier, structured and saddle-stitched on the outside (typically Epsom or Box calf); the Retourne, slouchier with stitching on the inside, usually in Togo, Clemence or Swift. Whether the strap is included is a separate, value-relevant check.

Leathers and materials

Five leathers dominate Kelly production. Togo, grained and lightweight, is the most versatile — the default Retourne leather. Epsom, embossed and rigid, holds shape and resists scuffs: the modern Sellier choice. Box calf, smooth and glazed, takes a remarkable patina but demands care (scratches, water). Swift is matte with a soft hand. Clemence is heavier and slouchier, leaning into the Retourne silhouette. Exotics include Mississippiensis alligator, Niloticus and Porosus crocodile, ostrich, lizard, and the legendary white-graduated Himalaya niloticus that regularly clears six figures at auction.

Retail price, pre-owned price and value

Hermès raised Kelly prices again in 2026: Mini Kelly 20 in Epsom at $11,400 (up from $10,500 in 2025), Kelly 25 Togo at $13,700 (+8.7%), Kelly 28 in Togo or Epsom at $14,400. Exotics start above $50,000; Himalaya pieces rise sharply on the secondary market. On JoliCloset, pre-owned Kelly bags in grained leathers (Togo, Epsom) start around $6,500 for vintage pieces in good condition and reach well over $30,000 for recent Sellier in the most-wanted shades (Étoupe, Noir, Gold, Bleu Nuit). The Kelly is one of the few luxury bags where resale routinely meets or exceeds boutique price — particularly true of limited editions and exotics.

Authentication and what to check

On a verified Kelly, the Togo grain must stay even across the body — no flattened zones around the side gussets. The blind stamp (date letter, sometimes year) sits under the flap or on the strap, depending on the era. Each piece of hardware (lock, clochette, keys, Kelly turn-key clasp) carries crisp engraved plates. The "HERMÈS PARIS MADE IN FRANCE" embossing under the flap follows a specific typography whose stroke and kerning shift by decade. Our team verifies every bag before listing; a well-kept Kelly (conditioned leather, preserved corners) holds its rank for decades.
