From 1913 to Miuccia: the Prada heritage

Founded in Milan in 1913 by Mario Prada as a luxury luggage and saddlery house — and official supplier to the House of Savoy — Prada was reshaped by Miuccia Prada, Mario's granddaughter, when she took over in 1978. She pushed the maison into the contemporary era first with the Pocone nylon parachute cloth (1984), then by relaunching Saffiano as a signature in the 1990s. Raf Simons has co-directed creative since 2020. That dual culture — historical saddlery and conceptual avant-garde — is why a pre-owned Prada belt holds its finish better than most competitors.

Saffiano, Re-Nylon and Pocone: knowing the materials

Saffiano leather is embossed calfskin pressed with a fine diamond-cross pattern and sealed against water and scratches — still the benchmark for dress belts and leather belt bags. Re-Nylon, the 2019 recycled-plastic relaunch of Prada's 1984 Pocone military nylon, runs the technical-strap belts and the triangle-logo nylon belt bags. Authenticating a Prada belt: the triangle screw tell

Our team checks the triangle plaque first: on an authentic piece it is fixed with tiny screws visible on the back, never glued — this is the single strongest authentication marker across all Prada leather goods. The enamel itself must be flat, bubble-free, with a sans-serif "Prada Milano" logo. We then verify the depth and regularity of the Saffiano cross-hatch (laser-engraved, never flat-printed), the interior stamp "Prada Milano" with "Dal 1913", and the serial code. Buckle hardware on genuine pieces is solid brass, palladium-plated or antique-gold, with a recessed "Prada" hallmark on the buckle bar.
