The Mediterranean region is, with the basins of the Indus, Ganges, Yellow River and Yangtze, one of the most important for the history of the world. It is the starting point of several great civilizations, which was nourished by Western civilization.
As soon as man has been able to build boats, ships, the Mediterranean has become a link between continents, navigation to reach two points more easily than walking, and to carry much heavier loads.
