The Chanel Deauville tote takes its name from the Normandy seaside town where Gabrielle Chanel opened her very first boutique in 1913, on rue Gontaut-Biron. Exactly a century later, in Spring 2013, Karl Lagerfeld introduced this oversized shopper as a tribute to the house's founding address. Its open top, twin leather handles and large CC logo printed on the front — typically paired with "31 rue Cambon Paris" or a collection-city name beneath — have made the Chanel Deauville one of the most recognizable canvas totes on the pre-owned market, and the standard entry point into the brand. Deauville sizes: Small, Medium and the XL Shopping Tote

The Deauville comes in three core formats. The Small (roughly 33 cm wide) works as a refined day shoulder bag with room for a wallet, phone and the essentials. The Medium (36 to 38 cm) is the most balanced size — it swallows a 13-inch laptop and moves easily between city days and weekends. The Large, often sold as the XL Shopping Tote, stretches past 46 cm and functions as a proper travel bag or beach tote. All three sit comfortably on the shoulder, and most editions include an interior zip pocket.

Canvas, raffia, denim or tweed: picking a material

The 2013 twill canvas is the most common version: light, soft-handed and durable when you avoid prolonged rubbing at the corners. At boutique, the Medium canvas Deauville sat around $2,800 before it was quietly pulled from the permanent line-up. Seasonal raffia editions have crossed $4,000 at launch. On a genuine Deauville, the front CC print is perfectly centred, with crisp letterforms and no ink bleed. The "31 rue Cambon Paris" line (or the collection's city stamp) sits precisely below the logo. Inside, a discreet metal plate or embossed stamp carries the serial number, paired with a hologram card and — for pieces produced from 2021 onward — a microchip embedded in the lining.
