Balenciaga City Bag

The Balenciaga City — first called "Lariat" and then "Motorcycle" — was designed in 2001 by Nicolas Ghesquière. Distressed goatskin, brass studs, decorative buckles and long zipped "Lariat" tassels make it the bag that defined the 2000s It bag era. Sizes and variants

The City spans several sizes across generations: Mini (≈25 cm), Small (≈30 cm), Medium / Classic (≈38 cm) and Large / XL (above 40 cm). Every size pairs the rolled twin top handles with a leather-laced chain shoulder strap. On hardware: Classic Brass aged brass on Ghesquière originals; Giant 12 and Giant 21 with oversized studs (rose gold, silver); Edge polished silver on later seasons. The Demna-revived Mini from 2022 keeps the original silhouette.

Leathers and archive colours

Aged goatskin, naturally distressed, gives the City its trademark softness: it marks lightly but develops a smooth, sought-after patina. A few seasons use softer lambskin, patent calfskin or quilted leather. Archive colourways — Magenta, Bubblegum, Anthracite, Bordeaux, Forest, Charcoal — are no longer produced and hold their value strongly on the second-hand market. At retail, a Demna-era City Mini starts around €2,000. On the pre-owned market the City is one of the most value-resilient Balenciaga bags, especially on Ghesquière-era seasonal colours — some pieces trade above their original retail. Authentication

On a bag as widely copied as the City, authentication is central. Check: the interior leather provenance card (serial number + year), the "Made in Italy" embossing, the casting of the studs (Classic Brass shows slight irregularity when genuine), the beige logo lining and the length of the "Lariat" tassels.
