Designed in 2001 by Nicolas Ghesquière, the Balenciaga City — known as the Motorcycle or Lariat — defined the It-bag aesthetic of the 2000s. Washed, deliberately distressed lambskin, an inner mirror, long shoulder straps and that unmistakable signature: a Lampo zipper trimmed with flat studs and a braided leather tassel. Worn by Kate Moss, Nicole Richie and the Olsen sisters, it remains one of the most recognisable icons of Parisian rock-chic. Sizes, hardware and variants

The City comes in several formats: First (the most compact, short handles only), Classic City (the historic size with removable shoulder strap), Part Time (elongated, ideal worn on the shoulder) and Work (XL, used as a tote). Hardware-wise, Classic brushed silver is the benchmark; the Giant 12 and Giant 21 editions — oversized gold or silver studs — capture the highly sought 2007-2012 era.
