Burberry was not founded in 1856 to make shoes: Thomas Burberry opened a draper's shop in Basingstoke, patented gabardine in 1879, kitted out Shackleton's 1914 expedition, and in 1912 drew the trench coat that the British army would adopt during the First World War. Footwear arrived much later, as an extension of that iconography — Italian leather, tartan lining, Nova Check canvas — applied to a compact but coherent shoe line. Burberry shoes are mostly produced in Italy by makers in the Marche region. Three materials structure the range: Italian smooth or brushed calfskin (for Heritage ankle boots, loafers and heels), waxed gabardine (borrowed from the trench, waterproof, used on rain boots and some buckets), and Nova Check canvas — a jacquard cotton weave in beige/red/black/white — coated for use on sneakers and mules. Daniel Lee shoes (2022-2025) bring the Burberry Blue and mushroom tones onto more sculptural silhouettes, with an Equestrian Knight metal detail on the heel counter.

Authentication: four checkpoints

Our team verifies on every pair. Inside stamping: "BURBERRY" and "MADE IN ITALY" heat-stamped on the insole, with a product reference alongside (letters + digits format). Nova Check alignment: on check canvas, the pattern must fall symmetrically either side of the lacing and continue cleanly onto the heel counter. Tartan lining: when present, the lining is printed onto leather or textile, never glued over a plain base lining. "Prorsum" mark: since the Prorsum line was discontinued in 2015, any pair marked Prorsum pre-dates that year — a useful dating anchor. Pair with a Burberry bag (3,321 pieces) or an accessory (325).
