Founded in 1853 at 233 Rue Saint-Honoré in Paris, Goyard is the oldest French trunk-maker still in operation — four years older than Louis Vuitton. The Goyardine canvas, created in 1892 by Edmond Goyard, remains the house's signature: a chevron motif woven from linen, hemp and cotton, then hand-painted using a process that has been kept secret across four generations. It comes in seven main colourways — black, brown, navy, green, red, white, yellow — plus a handful of seasonal shades. Coated-linen edge trims, Chevroches leather on the handles and saddle stitching are the other tell-tale details. Goyard also offers a bespoke marquage service — hand-painted initials, stripes and numerals — visible on many pieces in the pre-owned catalogue and a strong authenticity marker in its own right.
