NEW NEVER WORN

Created for the five hundredth anniversary of Christopher Columbus's discovery of America, this carré features the caravel Santa Maria sailing, on board which the navigator discovered the island of Guanahani (San Salvador) on October 12, 1492, while he thought he was docking in the Indies. To the right and left, the hemispheres of the Behaim globe illustrate the knowledge of the cartographers of the time, whose inaccuracies led Columbus to believe the Indies were closer than they actually were. At the top is represented the frontispiece of the work Les Voyages de Théodore de Bry (1528-1598), famous for its vivid descriptions of the first European expeditions to the Americas.
