Tweed holds a special place at Chanel. Gabrielle Chanel first worked with the fabric in the 1920s to soften the line of her tailored suits, and Karl Lagerfeld turned it into the house's defining signature from 1983 onward. JoliCloset currently lists more than a thousand pre-owned Chanel tweed pieces: jackets, bags, dresses, skirts and shoes, each checked by our experts before it goes live.
Chanel tweed: a fabric woven to order
Chanel tweed is not off the shelf. Since the 1920s the house has worked with Linton Tweeds, the English weaver based in Carlisle, which develops exclusive weaves from bouclé yarn, an irregularly looped thread that gives the cloth its texture. After Coco Chanel reopened the house in 1954, tweed production moved to France, where it is still handled by specialist mills today. Lesage, the embroidery atelier Chanel bought outright in 2002, embellishes certain tweeds with sequins, ribbon or metallic thread to create the fantasy tweeds seen on the runway.
The Chanel tweed jacket: what to look for
The Chanel tweed jacket has followed the same codes since the 1960s. Braid trim runs along every edge, pocket and cuff. A weighted chain is sewn into the hem so the jacket hangs straight and never rides up. The lining, in quilted silk, often echoes the color or pattern of the outer tweed. Four patch pockets and buttons stamped CC on the back, heavier and cleaner than on a fake, complete the look. Sleeves are cut deliberately short, a rule Coco Chanel enforced so a watch or bracelet would always show.
Bags, dresses and skirts: tweed beyond the jacket
Tweed reaches far past the jacket. The Classic Flap returns in tweed nearly every season as an alternative to caviar or lambskin, as does the Boy bag and, more recently, the Chanel 19. Tweed skirts and dresses either carry the same diamond quilting as the bags or stay plain to complete a matching skirt suit. These pieces generally trade at levels close to their leather counterparts, sometimes slightly below, since tweed is seen as more delicate over time.
Dating, authenticating and pricing a tweed piece
Chanel jackets run from a French 34 to a 44, marked inside the collar or waistband. Pieces sold before 2021 carry a numbered sticker inside a pocket as proof of authenticity, newer pieces use a chip and matching card instead. Before buying, check the bouclé yarn for pulls or snags, confirm the hem chain is still intact, it is usually the first part to come loose, and look closely at the button stamping on the back. On the pre-owned market, a Chanel tweed jacket typically sells for 1,500 to 6,000 EUR depending on the decade and the level of embellishment. Have a Chanel tweed piece to sell?
