The Chanel Classic Flap — also called the Timeless, reference 11.12 — is Karl Lagerfeld's 1983 reinterpretation of the 2.55 that Gabrielle Chanel introduced in February 1955 (the date gave the original its name). Lagerfeld kept the diamond quilting and the interwoven leather-and-chain strap, but replaced the rectangular Mademoiselle lock with the now-iconic CC turn-lock. Four decades on, it is the single most traded bag on the luxury resale market. The Small (23 cm) is worn daily by those who prefer a compact silhouette. The Medium (25 cm), which corresponds to official reference 11.12, is the most in-demand size — the "original" Classic Flap proportion. Caviar vs lambskin: which leather to choose

Two leathers dominate Classic Flap production and shape resale decisions. Lambskin — the original — offers a silky touch and a deep, lit-from-within sheen, but is more vulnerable to scratches and rain; it develops a beautiful patina but demands care. Caviar, introduced later, is a pebbled calfskin that is far more durable and recommended for a first Classic Flap or daily wear: it holds its shape and forgives scuffs. Authenticating a Classic Flap: hologram or NFC chip

Two authentication generations coexist on the resale market. Bags produced before April 2021 carry a Chanel hologram sticker inside the bag, paired with an authenticity card bearing the matching serial number — the two numbers must align. From April 2021 onward, Chanel replaced the hologram with an embedded NFC microchip and discontinued the paper card. Our experts also check the quilting alignment, stitch regularity, the CC turn-lock, the chain — always brass-plated, never hollow alloy — and the interior stamp ("Chanel Made in France" or "Made in Italy").
