Pre-Owned Chanel Gabrielle Hobo Bag | JoliCloset

Introduced by Karl Lagerfeld at the Spring-Summer 2017 show, the Gabrielle hobo was one of the designer's last major bag creations for Chanel. It carries the first name of Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel herself — a tribute the house had never granted any other model. More than 220 pre-owned Gabrielle bags are currently listed on JoliCloset, spanning sizes and materials that are now scarce at retail.

Sizes and variants

The Gabrielle comes in three core sizes: Small (roughly 20 × 15 × 8 cm, the most sought after), Medium (28 × 20 × 10 cm) and Large (36 × 26 × 12 cm). The Gabrielle Backpack (small and medium) is a highly collectible alternative, and runway shows have produced clutch and belt-bag versions. The silhouette pairs a structured base with a soft upper body, which is what gives the bag its slouched hobo shape.

The dual chain, a Chanel first

The Gabrielle's signature is its dual chain — one gold, one silver, woven together with leather. Mixing metals was long considered a faux pas, and Chanel made it a statement here. The twin straps allow four wearing options: short shoulder, long shoulder, crossbody or hand-carry. Collections have also introduced ruthenium, crystal-paved and two-tone braided variations.

Materials: aged calfskin and rare editions

The Gabrielle's signature material is aged calfskin, treated to show an immediate lived-in patina. This finish ages gracefully and disguises everyday micro-scratches — a real advantage on the resale market. JoliCloset's listings also include tweed, quilted velvet, patent leather, embroidered denim and — rarer — embossed or metallic crocodile runway pieces.

Price and resale value

At the Chanel boutique, the Gabrielle Small currently retails around €4,500–€5,200 depending on finish, and the Medium €5,000–€5,800. On JoliCloset, pre-owned Gabrielles start around €1,200 for the simpler models and climb past €6,000 for exotic or crystal-paved editions. Produced in limited runs since 2017, the model holds its value particularly well — especially the Small in black aged calfskin.

How the Gabrielle compares to other Chanel icons

The Gabrielle occupies its own niche in the house's catalogue. If you are weighing options, browse our selection of Chanel Timeless Classic Flap bags, Boy bags and Chanel 19. For a lighter everyday carry, the Wallet on Chain remains a soft, compact alternative.

Authenticating a pre-owned Gabrielle

Every Chanel Gabrielle bag listed on JoliCloset is reviewed by our in-house experts: seven- or eight-digit serial number depending on the year, quality of the aged calfskin, stitch regularity, weight and stamping of the chains, CC engraving on the rear plate, grosgrain lining. Together with the interior hologram, these markers let us confirm a Gabrielle before it goes live.
