Pre-Owned Chanel 2.55 Bag | JoliCloset

The 2.55 is the origin point of Chanel leather goods. Designed by Gabrielle Chanel in February 1955 — hence the name — it was the first quilted bag to feature a shoulder strap, at a time when women were still expected to carry their bag in hand. JoliCloset currently lists 75 pre-owned 2.55s, both vintage and Reissue, each one authenticated piece by piece by our in-house team, at a clear discount against the boutique price (the current 225 Reissue retails around €8,900).

2.55 vs. Timeless Classic Flap: the one thing to know

This is the single most common confusion, and it matters when you buy second hand. The authentic 2.55 carries the Mademoiselle lock: a rectangular metal turnlock, with no CC logo. Coco Chanel never married, and "Mademoiselle" is the historical signature of the model. In 1983, Karl Lagerfeld redesigned the line and replaced the Mademoiselle lock with the interlaced CC turnlock: that version became the Timeless Classic Flap, a separate model the house still produces today. Put simply — any Chanel bag with a CC clasp and a leather-laced chain is a Timeless, not a 2.55.

The 2005 Reissue: the modern 2.55

To mark the model's 50th anniversary, Karl Lagerfeld reissued it in 2005 in a version faithful to the original: lightly distressed calfskin, all-metal chain (no woven leather), rectangular Mademoiselle lock, burgundy lining, and a hidden pocket under the flap. That Reissue is what circulates in volume on the pre-owned market today. Pre-2005 2.55s exist — in quilted lambskin or jersey, like the very first one — but they are rare, well documented, and sought after as true collector pieces.

Sizes 224, 225, 226, 227, 228

Chanel labels each Reissue size with the two-digit figure that follows "2". The 224 (about 24 cm) is the mini, worn on the shoulder or on a shortened strap. The 225 (25 cm) is the most popular — the day-to-evening size. The 226 (27 cm) sits close to a classic medium flap. The 227 (28 cm) is the everyday size that fits a slim diary and a wallet. The 228 (31 cm) is the Maxi — almost a tote, particularly sought after in smooth black calfskin. On JoliCloset, 225 and 226 units make up most listings, with occasional standout 228 vintage pieces.

Every detail tells a story

Nothing on the 2.55 is decorative. The diamond quilting is borrowed from the jackets Gabrielle Chanel saw on jockeys at Longchamp. The burgundy lining echoes the colour of the uniform she wore as a child at Aubazine abbey, where she grew up. The hidden pocket under the flap was designed to hold love letters. The chain strap itself is drawn from the keychains the caretakers of the orphanage carried at their waist. These details are not marketing — they are carried, intact, on every Reissue and every authentic vintage 2.55.

Price and value on the pre-owned market

The Reissue 225 retails at around €8,900 in boutique today — less than a decade ago it sat below €4,000. On JoliCloset, authenticated pre-owned 225 Reissues trade between €3,000 and €5,500 depending on condition, colour and hardware. Pre-2005 vintage 2.55s, in jersey or lambskin, cover a wider range — from roughly €2,000 for a well-worn example up to €10,000 and beyond for documented collector pieces. Unlike many luxury bags, the 2.55 has a strong value-retention track record, especially in the 225 and 226 sizes, in black or burgundy.

Authenticating a 2.55 before you buy

Three tells give away a problem piece: a CC clasp in place of the rectangular Mademoiselle (that is either a Timeless or a fake), a leather-laced chain instead of the all-metal strap, and a serial number that does not match the claimed production year. On JoliCloset, every 2.55 is verified by our experts — clasp, hologram, stitching, burgundy lining and serial code — before it goes live. Explore the rest of the house's classics too: the Mademoiselle line that shares this historic lock, the Boy bag for a more androgynous design, the Wallet on Chain for a clutch-format piece, the Gabrielle and the Chanel 19 for the house's more recent silhouettes.
