Launched in 1999 under a Luxottica license, Chanel eyewear is the only Chanel category not produced in-house — a detail collectors track closely. The cult reference is the 5208-Q, an oversized square acetate frame with pearl-embellished temples that retailed around €550 when in production and now commands over €1,000 pre-owned. Iconic references

The 5208-Q (pearl-temple square) leads desirability, followed by the 5380 cat eye with CC temple, the 4222 metal aviator with CC hinge, and the 5414 square frame with a genuine tweed inset on the temple. Collectors also hunt the 4017 rimless with diamanté CC and the 5188 oversized shield from the early 2010s, long discontinued. Retail opened around €330 for standard acetate and climbed to €500–€900 for pearl, crystal or tweed editions.

Reading the model reference

Every Chanel pair carries a code in the form "CH + 4 digits", sometimes with the -Q suffix for precious editions (pearls, woven leather). The 5xxx series designates sunglasses, the 3xxx optical frames. Materials run from Italian acetate and machined metal through woven tweed, resin or glass pearls, Swarovski crystal and sculpted camellia. The pre-loved market is the only way back to sold-out seasonal colorways.

How to authenticate

Inside the temple arm you should find the stamp "CHANEL", the model reference (e.g. 5208-Q), the size (54□18 140) and MADE IN ITALY — Luxottica being Italian. The CC temple logo is enamelled or inlaid, never printed; on metal frames, nose pads are engraved with the CC. On pearl editions, each pearl is glued into a recessed setting, never protruding. The original case is black quilted leather echoing the bag DNA, with a white CHANEL-logoed microfibre cloth.
