Dior Diorama Bag — Raf Simons, microcannage, metallic | JoliCloset

Presented by Raf Simons at the 2016 Cruise show — his final collection before leaving the house — the Diorama is a structured flap bag drawn from Art Deco compact mirrors. Its signature: the microcannage, a hexagonal geometric quilting borrowed from the Napoleon-III leather fauteuils but tightened down to a near-studded scale. Anchored by an oversized CD clasp and a chain woven through leather, the bag was quickly picked up by Rihanna and Bella Hadid before being progressively phased out in 2017. On JoliCloset, 50 pre-owned Dior Diorama bags still circulate, from Mini to Large, in smooth calfskin, perforated microcannage or metallic finishes.

Sizes and silhouettes

The Diorama runs in four formats. The Mini (17 × 12 × 5 cm) is shoulder-or-cross-body on its leather-laced chain. The Small (22 × 17 × 7 cm) is the most versatile. The Medium (25 × 19 × 8 cm) handles everyday loads; the Large (30 × 22 × 9 cm) is rarer. On our catalogue, the Diorama handbag counts 37 listings, alongside Diorama clutches (6 pieces) and wallets on chain (3 pieces) in the same motif.

Microcannage, metallics and materials

Three leather families structure the collection. Microcannage in lambskin or calfskin — small interlocking hexagons in a honeycomb pattern — is the model's visual signature, produced in black, white, burgundy and mustard yellow. The metallic versions (silver, rose gold, gunmetal) are the most emblematic of the Simons era and the most coveted on the secondary market. Smooth calfskin dresses the cleaner pieces, sometimes accented with metal studs. A pyramid-stud edition and a python version were produced in limited runs. Most Dioramas combine the CD clasp with a leather-laced chain, occasionally paired with a gold chain shoulder strap.

Pre-owned price, rarity and value

With Dior having discontinued the model since 2017, supply has shrunk significantly. On JoliCloset, pieces start around €600 for a microcannage-lambskin wallet on chain and reach €3,200 for a rare metallic Mini or Small. The average pre-owned price sits between €1,100 and €1,500. The silver and rose-gold versions from the 2016 collection are particularly hunted by collectors and keep appreciating. The bag has clearly moved into archive territory — supply will not refresh.

Authentication: what our team checks

Our expert team verifies the regularity of the microcannage hexagons (patterns must be sharp, with no offset at the seams), the weight and "DIOR" engraving of the CD clasp, the condition of the leather-laced chain (supple, not sticky, no cracks), the "Christian Dior / Made in Italy" stamp inside, the production date code and the satin lining with diagonal CD print. On metallic versions, attention shifts to the absence of flaking and the uniformity of the metallic film. To sell your Diorama, our Dior consignment service covers free appraisal and a six-language listing.
