Kachinas are ceremonial dolls given to Hopi children, Pueblo Indians residing in the southwestern United conditions. The Hopi live peacefully, as their name suggests – Hopituh Shi-nu-mu means “The Peaceful People” –, and in harmony with the spirits. Ancestors, clouds, gods of fire or rain, malicious or benevolent spirits are personified during religious ceremonies involving boys as young as six years old, during their initiation. Hyphen between the real world and the invisible, these brightly colored wooden dolls loaded with symbolism are given to children to familiarize them with their ancestral beliefs and rituals.
