Born in 1978, Nicolas Buffe develops a very young interest in Japanese culture, cartoons, comics and video games. Graduate of Fine Arts of Paris, he resides in Tokyo since 2007 where he explores the Japanese pop culture that influences his plastic work, mixture of popular culture and classical culture. He received in 2010 the Grand Prix Call for the contemporary creation of the International City of Tapestry and woven art in Aubusson. He realized in 2012, at the Théâtre du Châtelet, the sets and costumes of the Haydn Opera Orlando Paladino. An exhibition will be dedicated to him at the Hara Museum in Tokyo in 2014. The Serio Ludere (play seriously), precept dear to many humanist writers of the Renaissance, proposes to treat serious subjects without omitting to amuse them. Wise posture that involves taking distance and conveying with humor and fantasy the deepest thoughts. This young French artist, nourished with Renaissance and Baroque art, but also manga, comics or video games, book here one of the compositions of which he has the secret, cleverly combining old formulas and modern images. In the center, an elephant symbolizes the idea of playing with knowledge. Bernini, in the 17th century, made the pachyderm bear the obelisk of Piazza della Minerva in Rome. This assemblage was inspired to the artist by an engraving of the Dream of Poliphile (Hypnerotomachia Poliphili), famous book published in Venice by Francesco Colonna in 1499. In this novel, wonderfully illustrated, the author explains that only a solid head, like that of this animal can support the weight of knowledge. Nicolas Buffe makes an elephant on a rocker.
