The Birkin was born on a 1981 Paris–London flight when Jane Birkin sketched her ideal carry-on for Jean-Louis Dumas on a sick bag. Hermès released the bag in 1984: rectangular silhouette, single flap with sangles, padlock and clochette, two rolled handles. Birkin sizes: from 25 to 40

The number is the width in centimeters. The Birkin 25 is the most coveted since 2020, the Birkin 30 remains the daily benchmark, the Birkin 35 is the original Jane Birkin format, and the Birkin 40 is a true travel bag. Hermès has also produced the Shoulder Birkin and HAC (Haut à Courroies) in 32, 40 and 50. Hardware comes in gold (GHW), palladium (PHW), and occasionally ruthenium or brushed finishes.

Hermès leathers: how to choose

Togo (grained calf, supple, scratch-resistant) and Clémence (softer, more relaxed grain) dominate the secondary market. Epsom is embossed and structured, holding its shape indefinitely. Box Calf is smooth and glossy — it shows wear, but develops a coveted patina. Swift is silky and saturates color.
