In three decades the Louis Vuitton backpack went from Parisian student gear — the 1990s Montsouris — to the most photographed bag on SoHo sidewalks, when the Palm Springs Mini landed in 2016. The most-searched models

The Palm Springs (250+ pieces in stock, Mini, PM and MM sizes) is the most-requested LV backpack, designed by Nicolas Ghesquière: Monogram canvas, adjustable straps that convert it into a handbag. The Christopher — PM, MM, Nano — designed by Virgil Abloh for menswear, is the Taurillon-leather statement option. Collectors hunt the Montsouris vintage (GM, MM, NM) with its drawstring and front-buckle closure. Sportier: Josh, Bosphore, Discovery — often used for travel.

Canvases, leathers and vachetta

The Monogram canvas is still the signature fabric of the LV backpack, with natural vachetta trim on the straps and handles that darkens over time. Damier Graphite (black and grey) dresses the menswear pieces. The Taurillon Monogram calf on the Christopher embosses the monogram directly into the leather — no vachetta, no patina to manage. Authentication: what we look at

On the Palm Springs, counterfeits trip on: strap stitch pitch (the real one has a very regular count), weight of the strap adjuster, LV engraving on the back of the buckle, and Monogram alignment on curved panels — a genuine bag keeps the pattern readable even on contoured sections. On vintage Montsouris: condition of the flap vachetta and drawstring, D-ring solder. Pre-March-2021 pieces carry a date code; later pieces carry an RFID chip.
