Versace since 1978: the Donatella line

Gianni Versace founded the house in Milan in 1978. After his murder in 1997, Donatella ran creative direction until Dario Vitale was named in 2025 — the same year Versace joined the Prada Group. Donatella set the baroque-stiletto vocabulary as we know it today: relief-cast Medusa, monumental platforms, architectural cutouts. Nearly every pair on this page is from her tenure.

The Medusa stiletto (also called Tribute) is the house classic: 85-105mm heel, round or pointed toe, gold Medusa on the throat, heat-stamped serial on the insole. The Medusa Aevitas platform carries a 155mm column in lacquered wood or leather-wrapped — a rare statement find second-hand. The loafer-heel hybrids, revived on recent runways, lift the Medusa or horsebit slip-on onto a block or kitten heel: the clean line of a loafer with the elevation of a pump. Retail price, materials and fit

Typical new retail: Medusa pump $990-$1,200, Tribute patent $950-$1,100, Aevitas platform $995-$1,450. Dominant materials: smooth calfskin, patent, suede, and — for summer capsules — clear PVC or satin. Authenticating a Versace heel

The outsole carries a deep die-cast Medusa — a shallow strike almost always signals a counterfeit. The insole shows a heat-stamped size and, on recent production, a serial number. The stiletto is built as stacked leather or lacquered wood — raw plastic is abnormal. The gold Medusa on the upper must be securely riveted (not glued) and keep readable face detail.
