Chanel Mules

Brought onto the Chanel runway by Karl Lagerfeld in the 1990s and kept alive through Virginie Viard's Cruise collections, the mule has become one of the house's most coveted silhouettes. Open back, closed toe, no heel strap: that last detail is what sets it apart from a slingback and turns it into a true slip-on shoe — equally at home on the Riviera and in a Paris office. Key Chanel mule styles

The maison offers several recognisable families. The flat CC mules, usually in diamond-quilted lambskin, are the most sought-after: gold or silver interlocking CC, slim sole, a couture-babouche silhouette. Block-heel mules in bouclé tweed, two-tone nappa or patent calf add five to seven centimetres and work with tailoring or raw denim. The clear PVC mules, introduced with the Spring 2018 collection, defined a decade with their wink at Mademoiselle's 1960s slippers. Shearling or fur mules, typical of the Métiers d'Art shows, are the winter option.

Mule or slingback: not the same shoe

Chanel mules are often mistaken for the house's famous two-tone slingbacks. The difference is simple: a mule has no strap at the back, leaving the heel free. Materials, sizing and the Massaro workshop

Most Chanel mules are crafted by Massaro, the historic Parisian bottier acquired by Chanel in 2002 and folded into the Paraffection ateliers. The most common materials are quilted lambskin, grained calfskin, bouclé tweed (sometimes embroidered with camellia pearls), suede and PVC. Sizes typically run from 34 to 42. The fit is often described as slightly narrow on flat pairs in rigid leather — going up half a size is a common recommendation.

Pre-owned market and pricing

At retail, Chanel mules start around $950 for canvas or PVC styles and cross $1,500 for quilted lambskin. Recent Cruise and Métiers d'Art editions hold their value particularly well.
