The Chanel backpack has spent years in the shadow of the Timeless, but the 1994 quilted Duma — rediscovered on the backs of Rihanna, Kim Kardashian and Miley Cyrus — has turned this niche into one of the most searched-for segments of the resale market. JoliCloset currently lists over 400 authenticated Chanel backpacks, from vintage Karl Lagerfeld archives to runway capsules that sold out on release and command multiples of their original retail today.
The most collected Chanel backpack models
The 1994 Duma is the grail. Built in quilted lambskin or caviar calfskin, it closes with twin CC turnlocks on the front flap, a flat slip pocket below, and an internal drawstring — a compact silhouette that looks almost identical three decades later. You'll find it across JoliCloset's Chanel bags selection, most often in black but periodically in red, navy and the rarer pop colours collectors chase.
The Coco Cocoon, designed by Karl Lagerfeld for the December 2008 Paris–Moscow Métiers d'art collection, swaps leather for lightweight quilted nylon with a soft bomber shape and leather lining. It has been revived in seasonal colourways ever since. The Graffiti backpack from Spring–Summer 2014, conceived as an "Art School" canvas rucksack with hand-sprayed Chanel logos and rope zipper pulls, sold out immediately; secondary-market prices routinely sit well above the original retail.
More recently, the Urban Spirit (mid-2010s) brings the shape into diamond-quilted or chevron lambskin with adjustable straps and a proper zip closure, while Coco Neige and Coco Beach capsules surface occasionally in technical nylon or coloured caviar.
Materials and buying guide
Lambskin has the softest hand but shows wear fast: on a backpack worn daily, expect tension creasing on the straps and light scuffs on the front pocket. Caviar calfskin is far more forgiving and ages slowly. Graffiti canvas and Cocoon nylon both handle heavy use well, but inspect the strap stitching — the usual fatigue point on a ten-year-old rucksack — plus the condition of the CC turnlocks, period-correct YKK zips, and the original interior lining. A relined bag that has passed through anyone other than Chanel loses value.
Price and value on the resale market
On JoliCloset, pre-owned Chanel backpacks range from a few hundred euros for well-worn Coco Cocoon nylons or Urban Spirit pieces up to several thousand euros for an excellent-condition vintage Duma or a runway Graffiti. Discontinued references — the Graffiti, original Cocoons, early Duma production — appreciate steadily because supply is finite. Always compare size, hardware tone (gold, silver, ruthenium) and serial hologram before you commit: between two comparable examples, price variance rarely exceeds 20%, and anything materially above needs to be justified by condition or provenance.
Authentication by our experts
Every Chanel backpack listed on JoliCloset is verified by our in-house team: serial hologram consistent with the production year, correct "Chanel Made in France" or "Made in Italy" stampings for the era, quilting regularity, turnlock finish, saddle-stitch evenness and factory lining. This matters even more on backpacks, where a wave of 2010s counterfeits targeted the Graffiti around its media peak.
Looking to sell your Chanel backpack? List it with us — our experts value it against current comps, and vintage Duma or runway Graffiti pieces typically move within days to an active collector base.
