The Hermès Birkin handbag was born from a chance meeting between Jean-Louis Dumas and Jane Birkin on a 1981 Paris–London flight — Jane sketched her ideal carry-on for him on a sick bag. Three years later, the maison released a rectangular flap bag with single sangles, padlock and clochette, saddle-stitched by a single artisan.
