New, never worn. This charming staging is inspired, certainly, by Giuseppe Arcimboldo, an Italian painter of the 16th century, protected from the Habsburg court. The gift of this artist for metamorphoses made his celebrity. From a basket of vegetables, a basket of fruits, a bunch of various fish, a pile of books, he was making a portrait of which, at first glance, one could not grasp the true nature. Henri d'Origny embraces this virtuosity and chooses the freshness of a wreath. An amazon made of iris and daffodils proudly rides her prancing horse ... She is none other than Lady Godiva (Godgifu). Lady Godiva, was a woman of the eleventh century Anglo-Saxon nobility, wife of Count Leofric of Mercia, lord of Coventry. Her name is associated with a legend appeared more than a century after her death, according to which the beautiful wife of Léofric would have crossed the streets of Coventry on horseback, completely naked. Indeed, the inhabitants of this city suffered under the overwhelming imposition of the count. Lady Godiva repeatedly appealed to her husband, who stubbornly refused to lower taxes. Finally, he claimed to accede to his request if she rode barefoot through the streets of the city. Lady Godiva took it at her word, and crossed the city, dressed only in her long hair. Her husband kept his word and suppressed taxes. She also helped found a monastery in Stow, Lincolnshire. In 1043, she persuaded her husband to build a Benedictine monastery in Coventry. His motto, "Ego Godiva Comitissa diu istud desideravi", was found on the charter given by his brother, Thorold de Bucknall, sheriff of Lincolnshire, to the Benedictine monastery of Spalding. She is commemorated as a benefactor in other monasteries and her name is mentioned in a survey of 1085, as one of the few Anglo-Saxons to defend their lands after her conquest, but also the only woman to be mentioned as a holder of a fief. A statue was erected in his honor at Coventry and even today, a "Godiva procession" instituted May 31, 1678, commemorates a legendary tour and continues today. Participants dress in 11th century costumes. The parade begins from the ruins of the old cathedral and follows the route formerly followed by the brave lady, passing of course near her monument. Period music and various competitions are organized, the most popular of which is Lady Godiva. It should be noted that only women participate, dressed in costumes of the eleventh century; the only condition, absolute, is to have long, golden hair.
