The Louis Vuitton Papillon was created in 1966 by Henry Vuitton, great-grandson of the founder. Its signature cylindrical silhouette and detachable zipped mini pouch give it a unique place in the maison's catalog — a soft, versatile day bag built around essentials. Our catalog gathers close to 500 pre-owned Papillon bags authenticated by our experts, across the historical sizes and the more recent Trunk reissue.

Historical sizes and modern reissues

Several sizes coexist. The Papillon 26 (26 × 16 × 16 cm) is the reference shape, with its matching interior pouch. The Papillon 30 (30 × 16 × 16 cm) is rarer and holds slightly more. The Papillon 19 (19 × 12 × 12 cm) is the mini version, in high demand today. More recently, Nicolas Ghesquière reinterpreted the model with the Papillon BB and especially the Papillon Trunk (20 × 10 × 10 cm), a structured chain-shoulder edition launched in 2018.

Monogram canvas, Damier and Epi leather

The Papillon was made mainly in coated Monogram canvas, but also in Damier Ebène, Damier Azur and more rarely in Epi leather. On vintage Monogram pieces, the natural-vachetta cowhide carries the signs of use: a honey patina is the model's signature and not a defect, but deep stains or blackened leather should be priced in. On newer versions (Papillon Trunk, Papillon BB), check the chain, LV clasp and Empreinte leather condition.

Pre-owned pricing

The Papillon covers a wide price range. Expect from roughly $300 for a vintage Papillon 26 in correct condition, and $400 - $700 for a Papillon 26 or 30 in very good condition with its original pouch. The Papillon Trunk in Empreinte leather trades between $1,400 and $2,300 pre-owned. Limited-edition or collab Papillon Mini pieces can run higher in sought-after colours.

Authentication and alternatives

Every Papillon bag is inspected: date code, canvas or leather, vachetta condition, presence and condition of the interior pouch.
