The Speedy launched in 1930 as a downsized travel companion to the Keepall — a small carry-on for short trips. Audrey Hepburn's 1965 special order birthed the Speedy 25 and turned a piece of luggage into the city bag we know today. The Nano Speedy (16 cm) is the crossbody favourite of the resale market. The Speedy 25 (25 cm) remains the historical best-seller — Audrey's size, and the one that holds value best. The Speedy 30 swallows a slim laptop, the Speedy 35 doubles as a weekend bag, and the Speedy 40 returns to its travel roots. Since 2011 the Bandoulière version adds a removable strap and signed luggage tag.
Canvases and leathers: Monogram, Damier, Empreinte
The coated Monogram canvas (1896) is the historical signature: water-resistant, it ages by patinating the natural Vachetta trim of the handles and piping. Damier Ebene (1888) offers a more discreet checkerboard, while Damier Azur (2006) reads as a summer staple. Empreinte leather, introduced in 2010, embosses the Monogram into full-grain calf — more luxurious but more prone to scuffs. The brass zipper pulls, numbered padlock and Riri zipper are key authentication checkpoints.
Pre-owned vs retail pricing
A new Speedy 25 Monogram now retails above €1,700 in boutique; on JoliCloset, authenticated pre-owned pieces start from around €350-450 for vintage examples and €700-900 for recent excellent-condition ones. Authentication
On Speedy bags produced before 2021, the two-letter four-digit date code is embossed on a small leather tab stitched onto the lining; from spring 2021 onwards Louis Vuitton replaced it with an embedded RFID microchip. Our experts check stitching regularity in saffron yellow thread, Monogram alignment at the seams, the heat-stamped "LOUIS VUITTON Made in France" mark and a patina consistent with the stated age.
