Hermès Silk Carré

The 90 × 90 cm silk twill carré, woven in Lyon, is the founding object of Hermès' textile section. The 90 carré — how it's made

The fabric: natural silk twill, around 75 g, roughly 90 × 90 cm, woven at Pierre-Bénite near Lyon. The design starts as an artist's plate, photo-engraved over 6 months to 2 years to break out each color. Flat screen-printing can pull from up to 36 colors out of a 30-silk-thread palette. The hand-rolled hem is sewn with the warp — never cut. Every carré carries the artist's signature, the design title and the ©HERMÈS mark.

Prints to know

Brides de Gala (Hugo Grygkar, 1957) remains the historic best-seller. Casaques, Quadrige, Della Cavalleria, Le Voyage de Pythagore (Annie Faivre) and Cosmos lead the section. On the vintage side, equestrian designs (Springs, Cliquetis) and 1970s-1980s re-editions are particularly sought after.
