How to date a vintage Chanel bag

Every authentic bag carries a serial number on an interior sticker, paired with an authenticity card. Up until the mid-2000s, that number ran to 7 digits from series 0 through 9, with no hologram. From 2005, Chanel switched to holographic stickers and 8-digit numbers from series 10 through 31, two interlocking CC logos, a cross-cut pattern that tears if peeled. Since 2021, the house has dropped the hologram for an NFC chip built into the card. The turn-lock shape is another marker: thin and rounded early on, heavier and more sharply engraved from the 1990s, stamped Made in France or, less often, Made in Italy.

What to check on a vintage piece

Wear on a bag over twenty years old should be consistent. Gold-plated hardware may show light tarnishing; hardware peeling in patches usually means poor storage. The quilting should hold its original puff, without flattened panels or loose stitching. The leather-woven chain strap dries out and cracks over time on pieces that were never conditioned. Be wary of leather that looks too even, or a color too crisp for the stated age, often a sign of resurfacing or re-dyeing that hides damage rather than repairing it.
