Celine Cabas Tote Pre-Owned — Horizontal, Phantom | JoliCloset

The Celine Cabas is not a single model but an entire tote family running across the maison's three recent creative eras: the Horizontal Cabas in soft leather (Phoebe Philo, 2011), the Phantom with open side wings (Phoebe Philo, 2013), and the Maillon Triomphe Cabas in monogram canvas revived by Hedi Slimane in 2019. JoliCloset carries 139 authenticated pre-owned pieces, priced from €500 to €2,200.

Three eras, several silhouettes

Under Phoebe Philo, the Cabas was conceived as a logo-free, stripped-back tote: the Horizontal (wider than tall, approx. 47 × 33 cm) and the Vertical (taller than wide, approx. 40 × 43 cm) carry on the shoulder via two flat stitched handles. The Phantom (Medium 39 × 30 cm, Small 37 × 27 cm) adds open side wings that give it its "shark-mouth" silhouette. Under Hedi Slimane, the Cabas hybridises with the Triomphe monogram in jacquard canvas — the same interlocking-C chain motif from 1971, re-activated after 2018 as a Hedi signature. Each era has its own patina and market pricing.

Materials and colors

Smooth supple calfskin on Phoebe Horizontal and Phantom (delicate but beautiful with age), firmer grained leather on some Maillon pieces, Triomphe jacquard canvas as the Hedi signature, canvas/saddle-leather combos, suede and nubuck on capsule editions. Most-asked colors: black, tan, cognac, light grey, navy, burgundy, and the Phoebe bicolors (white/black, tan/beige, red/navy) which are the Phantom's DNA. Leather or textile lining, one flat zipped pocket, two flat shoulder handles sewn saddle-stitch.

Price and value on the pre-owned market

Phoebe-era boutique pricing was about €1,650 for a Horizontal Small and up to €2,800 for a Phantom Medium in leather. On JoliCloset, expect €500-€700 for a canvas or leather Cabas in good condition, €900-€1,400 for a Phantom Medium in very good condition, and up to €2,200 for a near-new piece in soft leather. Phoebe-era Phantoms (thin sans-serif "Céline" with accent, pre-2019) hold and gradually appreciate — the model hasn't been reissued in its original form since Hedi. Post-2019 Maillon Triomphe canvas pieces are gradually entering the pre-owned market.

How to authenticate a Celine Cabas

"Céline Paris — Made in Italy" heat-stamp (with accent on pre-2018, without accent on post-2018 Maillon Triomphe stamped "CELINE"), manufacturer code embossed on an interior tab, leather edges painted evenly, tone-on-tone saddle-stitched handles regular on both sides, thin sans-serif "Céline" logo on Phoebe Phantoms, thicker all-caps "CELINE" on Hedi-era. On Triomphe canvas editions, check the jacquard weave regularity and the polished gold hardware with crisp edges.
