Pre-owned Hermès Drag Bag | JoliCloset

The Hermès Drag is an archive piece designed by Robert Dumas in 1964 — years before the Birkin. Its name refers to Hermès's equestrian heritage (the "drag" is the pull on a rein) and reappears in the signature sliding-bar-through-ring closure. Rounded silhouette, structured side tabs and that distinctive metal link detail make the Drag instantly recognisable; Hermès brought it back in 2022 as the New Drag 22 shoulder bag. On JoliCloset every Hermès handbag — Drag included — is verified by our experts, with close to 9,900 Hermès pieces in the catalogue.

Sizes and variants

Two formats circulate on the pre-owned market. The Drag 32 is the historic version, produced from the 1960s: wide opening, prominent sliding tabs, gold-plated or palladium hardware. The New Drag 22, relaunched by Hermès in 2022, keeps the iconic closure in a smaller shoulder silhouette with a removable strap. Vintage pieces usually ship with their original chain; contemporary ones come with the detachable Hermès strap.

Leathers and materials

The Drag has been produced in several signature Hermès leathers. Veau Grain Lissé (VGL) — a glossy pressed calf, light and scratch-resistant — is strongly associated with 1970s–1990s Drags and was dropped by Hermès in 2003, making it a vintage marker. Box Calf, the maison's oldest leather, was used on the most structured Drags and develops a deep patina with time. Chèvre (goat), tough and light, and Epsom, grained and firmer, appear on more recent production. For a first pre-owned purchase, a well-kept Box Calf or a low-wear Epsom remain the most versatile.

Pre-owned price and value

Discontinued Hermès usually means scarcity: a vintage Drag 32 typically trades between €1,500 and €5,000 depending on condition, leather and hardware, while a recent New Drag 22 sits well above €8,000 second hand. The average Hermès piece on JoliCloset sits around €4,390 across all sub-categories. Buying a Drag pre-owned is the only reliable way to access the 32, which is no longer sold in boutique.

Authenticated by our experts

Every Drag listed on JoliCloset goes through our authentication team: workshop-stamp check (year letter + atelier code engraved in the leather), saddle-stitch seam inspection, hardware and leather quality assessment. Also explore the other Hermès icons: Kelly, Bolide, Constance and Evelyne.
